Christmas Break Highlights

1. Outings with the family. I just love that there is so much to do in DC around Christmastime. We went and saw Christmas lights, drove to D.C. to see the National Christmas Tree which in Jenn's opinion was in a word "underwhelming," went after Christmas shopping and got some incredible deals like a pair of heels that was originally $80 for $23, drove up to the DC Temple to see the lights where I ran into my good friend Anna who's serving as a missionary there, and went to the National Harbor to see the gorgeous Christmas decorations and explore the harbor and all of the cute shops.

2. Christmas lights with the Buhlers. It's become a yearly tradition to go on a Christmasy outing with our good friends the Buhlers over break. This year, we went out to dinner at Cici's, and definitely became the most exciting table in the restaurant. We seem to attract a lot of attention when our two families go out in public together! Then we went to see the drive through lights at Bull Run. Amy and I swapped cars with Spencer and Kenna and had a blast catching up with Brody and Keary and looking at the lights with Cole and Ethan while sending snapchat videos back and forth with the kids in the other crazy car!

3. Christmas Eve and Christmas. I absolutely love Christmas Eve. I actually almost love it more than Christmas day. My mom and aunts and Grandma always prepare a delicious dinner. My sisters and cousins and I repay them by putting on a little Christmas Eve program followed by some caroling in the house and then to a few of Grandma and Grandpa's neighbors who always send us back to Grandma's with some treats in tow. There's nothing like having the whole family together to get in the spirit of Christmas! We then spent Christmas day exchanging presents, enjoying a delicious breakfast Mom made, Skyping with Matthew, and relaxing and Grandma and Grandpa's house!

4. Skyping with Matthew. Technology is great. On Christmas Day, we got to hook up Amy's computer to the T.V. in Grandma and Grandpa's living room and got to talk to Elder Frederickson for an hour! It was so fun to hear all of his stories! As an added bonus, we found out today that he got transferred to London, where I'll be for study abroad in 3 and a half months. No big deal or anything.,.

5. Visit from the Shipps. It's always a good time when the Kansas cousins come to town and the whole crazy bunch is together! We went jogging/hiking in Great Falls Park, had a rockin' New Years' Eve that consisted of Chinese food, The Office, confetti, and four bottles of Martinelli's sparkling cider, and enjoyed a chocolate tour in Georgetown.
 Chocolate Tour of Georgetown!

We watched this guy kayak down a waterfall at Great Falls Park and were so impressed that we had to ask him for a picture!

I  feel so blessed to have such a loving, fun, and supportive family to come home to! Christmas break was amazing. It could not have been more perfect!

Life Changes and New Adventures

I thought that I had the next couple of years of my life all figured out. I am a prime example of a chronic over-thinker, and the queen of the pro/con list. I had carefully thought out every recent decision I had made. I was settled at the school where I had been working, I had a good apartment and ward, and I had just been accepted to a 2 year long Master's of Education program, which would fulfill one of my long term goals. Yet something still felt off. Despite the fact that I thought I had a good direction in my life, I felt confused and unsettled. It felt like I was trapped inside a box. I would walk in one direction, hit the wall of the box only to turn in another direction and hit another wall.          The problem was, I just could not figure out what it was that wasn't right. I started taking the long way driving home from work each day and praying about my concerns. It took a couple of weeks of this before seemingly o...

Shipps on a Ship Part 1

It truly feels like just yesterday my grandparents gathered our family in the living room of our rented beach house and told us that they were taking us on a Disney Cruise. In reality, it was a year and a half ago and at the time it seemed like November 2014 would never come. It still almost felt like a dream even as we boarded our plane to Orlando last Saturday after MUCH airport turmoil, i.e. Michael forgetting his carry on at security, Jonathan getting a bloody nose, and me almost losing my debit card. Against all odds, the Shipp cousins made it to Orlando in one piece. I always get teary-eyed when I see my family after a few months away, and this time was no exception! Just as we were getting settled into our hotel room, we found out that our toilet was broken, so we had to move rooms! Once we were finally settled, Uncle Dave was kind enough to take as many cousins as could pile into his van for a McDonald's run. We spent Sunday in Downtown Disney, visiti...

Until We Meet Again

On Friday, my Grandma Freeman passed away. She was almost 90 years old and lived a long, full life. She was kind, loving, a hard worker, and fiercely loyal. She taught elementary school, and I've always loved the fact that both of my grandmas were teachers, and good ones at that. We joke in our family that teaching runs in our blood, and it's an honor to be able to carry on her legacy.            For most of the years I was growing up, she lived in New York, in the small, small town of Hornell. My dad would take us on weekend trips to visit during the summers. In fact my first time driving on the highway with my learner's permit was on the way up to visit them one summer, and I remember proudly announcing that when we walked into the house. We would always start off our visits with a trip to the ONLY restaurant in town (Pizza Hut) and then stop by the ONLY grocery store in town (Wegman's) for ice cream to take home,...
