Where Has the Semester Gone?

I can hardly believe it! In 12 days, I'll be taking my last final and then flying home! Every time I think about seeing my family again after 3 months and 3 weeks apart I get excited all over again! It definitely wasn't easy to be so far away from home. I had my fears about coming to BYU for sure. I was worried that I would get homesick, which I did of course. I was nervous that I wouldn't be able to handle the work load. It's so funny to talk to my friends now and realize that we all had the EXACT same fears, and that we all had moments when we first got here when we felt homesick or lonely. Here's a few of a things that has made my first semester of college so incredibly amazing!

1. My AMAZING friends
I have seriously met some of the most amazing friends in the world here at BYU! We have so much fun together, and they have become like sisters to me! Some of my favorite things we've done have been:

-loitering in the Cannon Center forever and ever
-my HARRY POTTER CONVERSION
-MOVIE NIGHTS (especially when we watch Harry Potter)
-study parties, with an emphasis on the party
-going to football games
-watching hilarious YouTube videos
-watching hilarious SNL skits
-watching Gilmore Girls
-the creation of the B.F.A.
-studying in the library and getting yelled at by the BYU police in the periodicals...
-late night trips to the Creamery after said study sessions in the library
-drinking sparkling cider and making toasts in the hallway after said study sessions in the library
-tunnel singing
-going to various shows and concerts
-trips to the Bookstore and the Cougar Eat
-inside jokes
-ON THIS NIGHT ON THIS NIGHT ON THIS VERY CHRISTMAS NIGHT
-talking about everything and just having so much fun together!
I love my friends SO much!

2. Tuesday Devotionals!
I LOVE going to Tuesday devotionals! There have been some absolutely extraordinary devotionals, my favorite being the one given by our amazing prophet, President Thomas S. Monson! He is an amazing man and an amazing speaker! Devotionals make my week!

3. My Three Favorite Classes: Choir, Dance, and my number one favorite BOOK OF MORMON!
Choir of course is a class I love, because I absolutely love to sing! Our director, who's name is Dr. Broomhead, is so awesome! I'm also in a beginning folk dance class and it is SO MUCH FUN! I've always had a secret dream of being a dancer. I'm taking beginning Tap next semester and I'm SO pumped! My favorite class is Book of Mormon! My professor, Brother Merrill, is absolutely phenomenal! His lectures are amazing! I've learned so much about the Gospel that I never knew before! I am so excited to take BOM part 2 from him next semester!

4. BYU's Atmosphere!
BYU just has such a loving atmosphere. Everyone is SO friendly! Sometimes the RM's are a little too friendly... Anyways, guys always hold doors for girls, the workers at the Cannon Center always ask how your day is going, and everyone is just so nice!

Basically, I love BYU and I've had an absolutely amazing first semester here! I can't wait for many more amazing ones to come!

Life Changes and New Adventures

I thought that I had the next couple of years of my life all figured out. I am a prime example of a chronic over-thinker, and the queen of the pro/con list. I had carefully thought out every recent decision I had made. I was settled at the school where I had been working, I had a good apartment and ward, and I had just been accepted to a 2 year long Master's of Education program, which would fulfill one of my long term goals. Yet something still felt off. Despite the fact that I thought I had a good direction in my life, I felt confused and unsettled. It felt like I was trapped inside a box. I would walk in one direction, hit the wall of the box only to turn in another direction and hit another wall.          The problem was, I just could not figure out what it was that wasn't right. I started taking the long way driving home from work each day and praying about my concerns. It took a couple of weeks of this before seemingly o...

Shipps on a Ship Part 1

It truly feels like just yesterday my grandparents gathered our family in the living room of our rented beach house and told us that they were taking us on a Disney Cruise. In reality, it was a year and a half ago and at the time it seemed like November 2014 would never come. It still almost felt like a dream even as we boarded our plane to Orlando last Saturday after MUCH airport turmoil, i.e. Michael forgetting his carry on at security, Jonathan getting a bloody nose, and me almost losing my debit card. Against all odds, the Shipp cousins made it to Orlando in one piece. I always get teary-eyed when I see my family after a few months away, and this time was no exception! Just as we were getting settled into our hotel room, we found out that our toilet was broken, so we had to move rooms! Once we were finally settled, Uncle Dave was kind enough to take as many cousins as could pile into his van for a McDonald's run. We spent Sunday in Downtown Disney, visiti...

Until We Meet Again

On Friday, my Grandma Freeman passed away. She was almost 90 years old and lived a long, full life. She was kind, loving, a hard worker, and fiercely loyal. She taught elementary school, and I've always loved the fact that both of my grandmas were teachers, and good ones at that. We joke in our family that teaching runs in our blood, and it's an honor to be able to carry on her legacy.            For most of the years I was growing up, she lived in New York, in the small, small town of Hornell. My dad would take us on weekend trips to visit during the summers. In fact my first time driving on the highway with my learner's permit was on the way up to visit them one summer, and I remember proudly announcing that when we walked into the house. We would always start off our visits with a trip to the ONLY restaurant in town (Pizza Hut) and then stop by the ONLY grocery store in town (Wegman's) for ice cream to take home,...
