Practice What You Teach

Several months ago, my sisters introduced me to an app called Timehop. Each day, Timehop shows you everything you have ever posted on that date on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. Amy, Matthew, Jenn, Abby, and I have a group message where we often share hilarious tidbits from our daily Timehop and mock our past selves. These were some gems from my Timehop posted on Twitter three years ago today: I know I know, who let me on Twitter right? I wish I had a good answer. Anyhow, some of you may know that I love to write. I am a pretty consistent journal writer, and sometimes when I write in my journal I write poems. I very rarely if ever share them, but these tweets, though ridiculous 3 years later, were posted at a time in my life when I was making crucial changes in my lifestyle. May started off with a surprise visit home to Virginia! We started our trip off driving to Missouri with my roommates Caroline and Alicia! We got to stop for a night in Kansas City and see the Shipps. We didn't get to stay nearly long enough, but it was so fun to have breakfast and catch up with them before we finished our drive! After a couple of days in Missouri, we flew home to Virginia and pulled off an awesome surprise!  We went to the top of the St. Louis Arch and saw a beautiful panoramic view of the city. On the way back, we stopped to see the St. Louis temple!  These four best friends were finally reunited (and of course were wearing each other's clothes).  Our fifth sister Kenna met us at church! ;) We also got to have breakfast with her cute mom who we adore!  We played tourist for a day and got a Capital exclusive tour from Aunt Becky, Enjoyed a gorgeous day in Great Falls Park,  Took attractive family selfies, ...

  This semester for my month of practicum, I knew that I was going to be assigned to a 3rd, 4th, 5th, or 6th grade class. The night before we were getting our placements, I told my roommate that I would be so happy with any grade BUT sixth, because I knew that I would NEVER  teach sixth grade. Ever. Well, you can guess what happened the next day. I got my placement.... Sixth grade. I didn't CRY, per say, but I was definitely a little teary-eyed walking through campus. I had a two hour break before I needed to be at work, so I got on my computer and researched the school and classroom I would be in. To add insult to injury, I learned that I would not only be in sixth grade, I would be in an ACCELERATED sixth grade. Well it's been since Christmas break since I've updated my blog! This has been the busiest, but one of the best semesters I've had at BYU! Since it's been a good three month since my last post, I'll just share some of this semester's highlights! 1. Long weekend in California:  Over President's Day weekend, my roommates Caroline, Alicia, Alyssa, and I decided we needed a little break from Utah, so on Friday afternoon we packed up Alyssa's car and started the nine hour drive to her house in Southern California. We spent Saturday shopping at an outdoor mall, reuniting with Chipotle (it's really time for Provo to get one already) and exploring the town. On Sunday after early morning church, we spent the rest of the afternoon at Ventura Beach. Caroline, Alicia, and I ventured into the FREEZING cold ocean and we took a long walk and laid out on the beach. It was a perfect little mini "spring break." 2. Sending off Elder Shipp  The foll...

Christmas break has always my favorite two and a half weeks of the year, but I've grown to love it even more than I ever thought possible ever since I up and moved across the country to go to college. There's no better feeling than landing at Washington Reagan and seeing the Washington Monument and the Capitol from the tarmac! We have established so many classic Christmas break traditions that are highlights every year! 1. Quality family time. It's quite lucky that my family and I get along so well, because we had plenty of quality time together this break! Whether we were going on fun outings, shopping, or just sitting around the living room talking or watching a Hallmark Christmas movie, we have so much fun just being together! We also made our return to ICE at the Gaylord Hotel at National Harbor, resulting in many quality pictures and rides down the ice slide.  DC Temple Lights!        After a gorgeous day at Castaway Cay, we got back on the ship to start sailing back towards America. We discovered when we got to dinner and were the only family not dressed in elaborate pirate costumes (I'm not exaggerating we really were the only ones), that Wednesday night on the ship was Pirate-themed. After dinner we popped into the movie theater to see Guardians of the Galaxy (a fantastic movie, highly recommend it if you're into the whole Marvel thing), and then headed up to Deck 11 for a pirate-themed show and fireworks. After the fireworks ended, a DJ started playing music and the Shipp cousins immediately became the life of the party! We laughed and danced and laughed at how ridiculous we looked dancing. It was one of those spontaneous moments where I wished I could slow down time and make it last a little longer! Day 2: Nassau, Bahamas         By the time we woke up on Tuesday morning, the ship was docked in the Bahamas. At breakfast, Matthew speculated that the island was just going to be a tourist trap and that we'd be back on the ship within an hour. We all called him a cynic, but it turned out he was exactly right. We went into this incredibly overcrowded market where I almost got all 21 of us signed up for a bus tour of the island (oops) and then walked down the streets and saw everything there was to see without dropping any money in about 30 minutes. So, just as Matthew predicted we got back on the ship, changed into our swimsuits, and headed up to the Cabanas for lunch and quality tanning time.
